Something very wonderful happened to me a number of years ago. The event was so humongous in scope that it still is being processed in my little old brain. The event that occurred did not add to my life, or even change a part of my life, it was much bigger. I became a whole new creation! When I learned of my lord and savior Jesus Christ that he lived and died for me as the perfect sacrifice, I did Romans 10:9 confessing him as lord and that God raised him from the dead. I became a son of God—a whole new being. I became filled with the gift of holy spirit. The new birth spirit was not just an add-on. As a result of this miraculous event I became a new creation in Christ!
Yes, the tall, fleshly body and mind of Bob still existed after I got born again of God’s Spirit, but as far as the Creator of the heaven and earth was concerned I became a whole new creation! I became His son, filled with His spirit for all eternity. The reality of my life as a new creation in Christ is much bigger than the reality of my body and soul.
In-spite of being identified with Christ being crucified, I still live. Yet, it is not I that lives, but the Christ in me, so that the life which I now live, though it is in the flesh, I live it by the believing concerning Jesus Christ, who loved me and gave himself for me. I am a new creation in Christ and that is the life which I now live. We have a whole new life to live, not just a side job. We are not just “moonlighting” as Christians; but we are sons of God, 24/7. Jesus Christ’s believing gave us a whole new standard of living. Our recognition of who we really are – a new creation in Christ – determines our day-to-day living. Do I live as a tall person who has this extra burden of having Christ within? Or do I live each moment as a son of God who happens to be tall? Some people look at their life and say, “I’ve got this job to do, family to care for, hobbies to participate in, as well as a spiritual addition of Christ within—another thing to deal with.” Let’s look at ourselves with the reality of what God’s Word says and what God sees. I am a whole new creation in Christ. Yes, I’ve got a fleshly old body; I have jobs I do, family to take care of, hobbies for entertainment, but now I do these as a new creation in Christ! The devil’s aim is to make believers think Christianity is another burden of life along with everything else. He is a liar! We are what the Word of God says we are and we will be what the Word of God says we will be. We are a new creation in Christ. “Beloved, now are we the sons of God…” (I John 3:2a). We are all challenged to live up to what God’s Word says we are. And we all fall short time and again, but because of God’s love, mercy and forgiveness we can always start anew. We can learn from our mistakes and be better equipped to move ahead. The key is to continue moving ahead. Don’t give up or be discouraged.
No matter what happens in our lives, it in no way detracts from the reality of who we are as sons of God. We just continue to pick ourselves up on the road of life and continue “…forgetting those things which are behind, and reaching forth unto those things which are before, I press toward the mark for the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus.” (Philippians 3:13b and 14). --Bob Lindfelt |
