Mary, the Mother of Jesus

E-mail Print PDF
A young woman engaged to be married, probably between the age of 14-16, was visited by an angel one day. This angel of God declared unto her that she would become pregnant and bear the son of God.

Mary was just like any other woman who ever lived. Yet, she was chosen from all other women. She obviously was not experienced in bearing children, so why did God select her? The one main requirement to please God is to believe Him. “But without faith it is impossible to please him…” (Hebrews 11:6). She was able to take what was told her and literally believe that she could give birth to the Christ child.

Think about her young heart in considering this declaration by the angel. She was being asked to accept the responsibility to not only give birth to the savior of the world, the lord Jesus Christ, but would have to raise him as well.

The pressures of life she had to bear were many. She had to deal with having an illegitimate child in the eyes of society. She had to deal with her husband to be because she was pregnant before they came together sexually. Family, friends and the community would be highly suspect that she became with child by way of the Holy Spirit.

She demonstrated great humility and boldness in accepting the role of the mother of the son of God. Her cousin Elizabeth conceived in her old age being 6 months along when she gave her testimony to Mary on how God performed a miracle for her to be pregnant. The angel declared, “with God nothing shall be impossible.” (Luke 1:37) .She fully believed what was told her by the angel. Mary said, “Behold the handmaid of the Lord; be it unto me according to Thy Word.” (Luke 1:38).

Interesting Facts Regarding Mary

§ She was a wonderful believer with inspiring character traits. She knew God’s Word and praised Him. (Luke 1:46-49).

§ She was of the right pedigree. She was a descendant of David.

§ She and her husband nurtured Jesus and taught him throughout his youth. (Luke 2:40-52).

§ She had 5 sons and at least 2 daughters. (Mark 6:1-6).

§ She was a disciple of Christ and was with him many times on his travels. She was there for his first miracle at Cana. (John 2:1-12).

§ She was there when Jesus was hanging on the cross. (John 19:25-27).

§ She was there after the ascension of Jesus Christ, just before Pentecost and obviously there to be a part of the beginning of the Christian Church that started on the day of Pentecost. (Acts 1:14).

While some religions revere Mary as the “Mother of God”, the truth is that she was a wonderful woman that took God at His Word. “Behold the handmaid of the Lord; be it unto me according to thy word.” (Luke 1:38). She remained faithful throughout her life time bringing up Jesus as a child and then became one of his disciples that followed him and supported him until his death, resurrection and ascension. She was there to witness the beginning of the Christian Church as they received the gift of the holy spirit, spoke in tongues and started to move God’s Word “unto the uttermost part of the earth.” (Acts 1:8).

We too deal with the pressures of life. We too have challenges that are not easy to deal with. We too have family, friends and work associates that play a part in our lives. In spite of that, we can like Mary, take God at His Word and walk as sons of God claiming His promises by saying, “be it unto me according to Thy Word.”
