Once as a child, I jumped from the garage roof. As I was quickly heading to the ground, I had no fear, for I had my cape on just like superman. If he could fly, why not me? At a young age I started to realize that some of the things I read and saw on TV were truly fiction. With my sprained ankle, I searched for a hero that didn't fly.
As a child it was my nature to copy somebody that was recognized as a hero. The world had many people of notoriety to copy. It was not until I was 20 years old that I discovered the most remarkable man that ever lived – The Lord Jesus Christ. His feats were and are unparalleled. What he has accomplished for the benefit of man are so profound and beyond measure. Why not be like him! And better yet why not be like His loving Father who made Jesus Christ.
God's Word teaches that our Heavenly Father wants believers to be like Him as His children.
Ephesians 5:1 & 2:
Be ye therefore followers of God, as dear children;
And walk in love, as Christ also hath loved us, and hath given himself for us an offering and a sacrifice to God for a sweetsmelling savour.
The word "followers" in the above verse is the word, mimetes in the Greek. We get our English word "mimic" from it. When we mimic something, we copy it. We want to be it, in all its manners.
Once a person confesses Romans 10:9 and 10, they become children of God. Since it is man's nature to find someone to copy or emulate, there is no one better to copy than our Heavenly Father.
Every Father wants his child to be like him. God is not any different. Our Heavenly Father has called us to a high calling that we can be most proud of.
Philippians 3:14 - 17:
I press toward the mark for the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus.
Let us therefore, as many as be perfect, be thus minded: and if in any thing ye be otherwise minded, God shall reveal even this unto you.
Nevertheless, whereto we have already attained, let us walk by the same rule, let us mind the same thing.
Brethren, be followers together of me, and mark them which walk so as ye have us for an ensample.
One of the most monumental callings ever declared for man to follow is this section of Scripture. The born again saint is perfect in Christ, and therefore has the mind of Christ. Therefore we can walk as "followers together." These two words are from the Greek word mimetes. Even the apostle Paul, put his life on the line for others to copy.
Hebrews 6:10 - 12:
For God is not unrighteous to forget your work and labour of love, which ye have shewed toward his name, in that ye have ministered to the saints, and do minister.
And we desire that every one of you do shew the same diligence to the full assurance of hope unto the end:
That ye be not slothful, but followers of them who, through faith and patience, inherit the promises.
What is the normal response to someone who has given you everything? God has laid out a lifestyle unmatched by anyone else. His standard far exceeds any of man's. Why not graciously respond to Him and walk in love.
I Peter 3:12 & 13:
For the eyes of the Lord are over the righteous, and his ears are open unto their prayers: but the face of the Lord is against them that do evil.
And who is he that will harm you, if ye be followers of that which is good?
We are to be followers [mimetes] of that which is good. God is good and we can mimic Him, because we have His spirit in us. Our heroes are seated in the heavenlies and far beyond what the world has to offer. Let's keep our vision high!
What an exciting life we have to live. Now when I jump, I don't waist my time on emulating worldly heroes. I follow the goodness of our Heavenly Father, following His Word. What a blessed life we live!
